Granny Square Day 2022

Crochet Granny Squares - Past & Present

Granny squares have long been a popular project for crocheters throughout history, hitting their hay-day in the 1970's. One of the main reasons for this is that they are quick shapes that you can make with any scraps of left over yarn. Granny squares are usually stitched together to create colourful granny square blankets, which have been historically called crochet Afghans (referring to the people of Afghanistan, with the first use of this term being used to describe hand woven blankets, colourful textiles and carpets appearing in the 1800's). From its boom in the 1960's and 70's with super-colourful granny square outfits, granny squares have consistently gone in and out of fashion, even appearing regularly in catwalk collections by fashion designers since the millennium.

Basic Granny Square pattern

You can make this basic crochet granny square pattern using any type of yarn or hook size, but we'd recommend a cotton Dk yarn and a 4mm hook.

Make a crochet magic loop (alternatively, you can ch4 and join with a ss in the first ch to make a loop).

Round 1 (RS) ch5 (counts as tr, ch2 throughout), (3tr, ch2) 3 times, 2tr, ss to 3rd ch of beg ch-5 to join [12 tr]

Round 2 (RS) ss into ch-2 sp, ch5, (3tr, ch1) into same ch-sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) into next 3 ch-sps, 2tr in same place as ss from start of round 2, ss into third ch of beginning ch-5 [24 sts]

Fasten off (or change colour using your preferred method)

Round 3 Using new colour ss into any ch-2 sp, ch5, (3tr, ch1) in same sp, *(3tr, ch1) in next ch-1 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in ch-2 sp; rep from * another two times, (3tr, ch1) in next ch-1 sp, 2tr in same place as ss from start of round 3, ss into third ch of beginning ch-5. [36 sts]

Fasten off (or change colour using your preferred method)

Round 4 using new colour ss into any ch-2 sp, ch5, (3tr, ch1) in same sp, *(3tr, ch1) in each ch-1 sp across to next corner, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in ch-2 sp; rep from * another two times, (3tr, ch1) in each ch-1 sp across to last, 2tr in same place as ss from start of round 4, ss into third ch of beginning ch-5

Once you know how to crochet a granny square, there's plenty of simple variations you can make to get different results from your crochet squares. With a basic granny square pattern you end up with quite a few holes in your square, but if you're after a more full and solid square, try this pattern below.

Treble Granny Square crochet pattern

Treble crochet squares are a great alternative to your basic granny square pattern, giving you an ever so slightly more filled-out square - this makes them particularly well suited for if you're making a granny square blanket! You can find the instructions below, or you can check out our handy video which also includes references to the chart (a simple way of understanding and introducing yourself to charts).

You will need

Any DK cotton yarn
1 ball of each:

• Yarn A Pink
• Yarn B Blue

Hook size
A 4mm or US G/6 hook

Treble Crochet Granny Square Pattern

With Yarn A, ch4, join with a ss into a ring (or make a crochet magic loop).

Round 1 Ch5 (counts as 1tr and 2ch), (3tr into ring, ch2) 3 times, 2tr into ring, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Round 2 Join Yarn B in any corner sp with a ss. Ch7 (counts as 1tr and 4ch), 2tr into same corner sp, *1tr in each of next 3 tr, (2tr, ch4, 2tr) into corner sp; rep from * twice, 1tr in each of next 3 tr, 1tr in corner sp, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Round 3 Join Yarn A in any corner sp with a ss. Ch7 (counts as 1tr and 4ch), 2tr into same corner sp, *1tr in each of next 7 tr, (2tr, ch4, 2tr) into corner sp; rep from * twice, 1tr in each of next 7 tr, 1tr in corner sp, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Round 4 Join Yarn B in any corner sp with a ss. Ch7 (counts as 1tr and 4ch), 2tr into same corner sp, *1tr in each of next 11 tr, (2tr, ch4, 2tr) into corner sp; rep from * twice, 1tr in each of next 11 tr, 1tr in corner sp, ss to top of beg ch-3, fasten off.
Weave in all ends.

The following round is an optional round. Often adding on an extra round of dc stitches will help to straighten up your edges and will also make it a bit easier when joining your squares together.

Round 5 (optional and not shown on chart below) Join Yarn A in any corner sp with a ss. Ch1 (does not count as stitch, *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner space, dc in each stitch along to next corner space* rep from * three times, ss in first dc to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using beige, make a crochet magic loop

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), 2tr in loop, 5-dtr cl in loop, 8tr in loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts]

Round 2 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch-3, 2tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [24 sts]

Round 3 Ch3, (2tr in next st, 1tr) 11 times, 2tr in final st, ss to top of beg ch-3. [36 sts]

Round 4 Ch3, tr in next st, 2tr in next st, (2tr, 2tr in next st) 5 times, change to coral, (2tr, 2tr in next st) 6 times, change to beige, ss to top of beg ch-3. [48 sts]

Carry Coral from start of next round.

Round 5 Ch3, tr in next 2 sts, 2tr in next st, (3tr, 2tr in next st) 5 times, change to coral, (3tr, 2tr in next st) 6 times, ss to beg ch-3. [60 sts]

Join blue in first st.

Round 8 Ch1, *dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ss to beg dc. [96 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]

Cheeks (make 2)

Using pale pink, make a crochet magic loop

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, 11tr in loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts]

Fasten off.

Eyes (make 2)

Using turquoise, make a crochet magic loop

Row 1 (RS) Ch1, 3dc in loop, turn. [3 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, 2dc in each st across. [6 sts]

Fasten off.

Hair

Cut strands of coral, 30cm long. Fold a strand in half, insert hook round post of any st in coral from Rounds 4-5 of Square, place loop on hook and pull through st, thread tails through folded end and pull tight to secure. Repeat for all coral sts on Rounds 4-5.

Trim to desired length.

To make up

Use the image as a guide when making up. Sew the Eyes and Cheeks in place. Insert safety eyes just below each Eye. Using black stranded cotton, embroider the lower lid and eyelashes. Using bright pink, embroider the mouth.

Weave in all ends.
